PHILADELPHIA -- Despite all the changes made in the front office and behind the bench, Ryan Kesler was not satisfied with the Vancouver Canucks path. Flyers Jersey. He still wanted out. "Were going to acquire high-quality people that are going to come in here and want to work hard for one another, so we didnt give it much thought." Kesler, who turns 30 in August, asked for a trade during what he called a "painful" regular season full of losing that ended without a playoff appearance and ultimately cost GM Mike Gillis and coach John Tortorella their jobs. He met with Benning after the season and reiterated that he wanted to go somewhere he could win. But the Livonia, Mich., native wouldnt go anywhere. His full no-trade clause allowed him to dictate his destination, and the only two teams hed approve a trade to were the Ducks and Chicago Blackhawks. Benning said the Canucks asked Kesler and agent Kurt Overhardt about expanding that list, but to no avail. Chicago was "in it right until the end," according to Benning, but it was important to him to get a potential No. 2 centre and a player who could grow into a top-four defenceman. He hopes he has that in the 26-year-old Bonino and 24-year-old Sbisa. Bonino had 49 points this past season -- some of that thanks to playing with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry -- while Kesler had 43. Sbisa missed time with a torn tendon in his hand but has been considered a top prospect since before he was traded to Anaheim from the Philadelphia Flyers for Chris Pronger at the 2009 draft. "Getting Bonino was an important piece ... (for) being able to replace his goal production for our team next year," Benning said. "Getting Luca, he gives us some physical play from the back end. Hes strong. He plays like a heavy game and I think in our division his heaviness is going to come in handy for our group." When Benning wrapped up the Kesler trade Friday afternoon, he was just getting started making moves. The Canucks traded defenceman Jason Garrison to the Tampa Bay Lightning for the 50th pick in the draft and then flipped the 85th pick acquired from the Ducks to the New York Rangers for grinder Derek Dorsett. Trading Garrison brings salary-cap relief in the form of $4.6 million over the next four seasons. Acquiring Dorsett means some familiarity, as he played under Desjardins with the WHLs Medicine Hat Tigers. Despite the bevy of moves, Benning refused to call the Canucks approach a "rebuild." "We acquired players that we thought are going to have an impact on us winning next year," he said. "If it was going to be a rebuild then maybe we wouldnt have tried to fight so hard to get players that can come in and help our team win next year." If Kesler believed the Canucks, under the new direction of president Trevor Linden, Benning and coach Willie Desjardins, were going to win next year, he most likely wouldnt have asked to be traded. The 2003 first-round pick had played his entire career with the Canucks, all 655 games worth. But on his post-trade conference call, Kesler made it clear he wouldnt have been happy sticking around. "The fact that theyre in a rebuild and are looking to get younger and are years away from being a contender, I think it was just time for me to move on and win and hopefully take home a championship," Kesler said. Toronto FC was well aware of the threat posed by the Irishman in what has been an MVP caliber season for Keane, third in MLS in goals and tied for second in assists. The sloppy defending on the Galaxy striker in a span of three first half minutes was altogether disappointing. TFC started the match well, with Steven Caldwell and Nick Hagglund seemingly up for the challenge, with multiple timely blocks and important interjections. The positive start was compromised by a momentary lapse in the 22nd minute. Some wonderful passing and movement by Marcelo Sarvas carved open Toronto FC down the middle and ended with Keane getting wrong side on Steven Caldwell inside the box. All he needed was an arms-length worth of space from Torontoa€?s captain to take the deftest of touches before slotting home past Joe Bendik. A goal-scorers goal and one Caldwell will rue. Keane struck again three minutes later, finding himself wide open inside the 18 yard box to volley home from an AJ DeLaGarza cross. The non-existent marking was a head-scratcher, with Hagglund and Kyle Bekker merely spectators to Keanea€?s brilliance. The defending after the 25th minute was much better. But against a quality team as such and a natural finisher as Keane, room for error is minimal. And the points were relinquished in a blink of an eye. Defoe Returns a€“ Many believed it wouldna€?t happen. Most predicted the end. The naysayers were wrong. Jermain Defoe returned for Toronto FC, coming on as a 59th minute substitute replacing Daniel Lovitz. It was Defoea€?s first action since August 23rd recovering from a long-standing groin injury. Defoe looked decent in half an hour of action. Hea€?s a constant threat while on the ball. The problem remains he doesna€?t get the ball at his feet nearly enough. The service to Defoe remains erratic and must improve to get the most out of the player. His first touch of the match was a dangerous ball played across the six-yard box that was cleared away from danger. There is no question Toronto is a markedly improved team with Defoe in it. Vanney deciding to give Defoe a run-out while down 2-0 is a positive sign. The manager would have never risked Defoe if he were not entirely confident in the players fitness. Getting some game action was paramount, as Defoe will be relied upon heavily in the final four games. Torontoa€?s next three opponents have shaky backlines, ripe for Defoe to take advantage. Vanney Risk a€“ How much do your trust the new manager? The decision to leave Gilberto at home to rest the Brazilian striker raised many eye-brows. A designated player not featuring in an all-important game with just five matches to go for a team in desperate need of points fits the bill as questionable. It doesna€?t just come through two marquee signings and/or just one off-season of positive changes. Ita€?s a gradual build. The star-power of the likes of Keane, Donovan and Omar Gonzalez is plain to see. Ita€?s squad consistency, players of quality who have been brought through the system who remain with the team for years on end which is key to team success. Los Angelesa€? blueprint under the leadership of Bruce Arena has developed incredible consistency and fluidity within the team. Finding and recognizing talent is paramount to the model. Second year striker and 16 goal scorer Gyasi Zardes is testament to talent recruitment and development. There is a disconnect between the Galaxy approach and the revolving door of players that have set-back Toronto FC season after season. Toronto FCa€?s front office is well aware of this. The Good: His combination of size, athleticism, strength, intelligence, and untapped potential make him the most intriguing offensive line prospect produced by the CIS since Mike Schad in 1986. The Bad: Despite all of his obvious tools, Foucault has yet to be consistently dominant at the university level. 3. Matthias Goossen (OC/OG, Simon Fraser) The Good: Combining toughness and intelligence, this three-time All-GNAC selection has played every position on the O-Line during his four years as a starter. The Bad: Despite having always played in Canada, he has never faced defenders who are a yard off the ball, as SFU and British Columbia high schools both play under American rules. 4. Pierre Lavertu (OC, Laval) The Good: Quick, strong and smart, he was a three-time All-Canadian and four-time All-RSEQ selection while anchoring the nations best collegiate O-Line. The Bad: His ceiling likely isnt as high as those ranked ahead of him. That said; hes as CFL ready as any prospect in the Class of 2014. 5. Now, prospects at U.S. schools become draft eligible upon completion of their college eligibility, eliminating redshirt juniors ("futures") from the draft. Those at Canadian schools now become draft eligible three years after using their first year of CIS eligibility. Bear in mind that while the eligibility rules have changed, the CFLs need for non-import offensive linemen hasnt, and the effect on this years draft process will be twofold. First, with Duvernay-Tardif most certainly NFL-bound, the demand for the other top linemen will be intense. For teams whose need is more immediate, theyll look to Lavertu and Goossen, as their learning curves wont be as steep as Foucaults. Regardless of the order, those three could easily be the first three players off the board and will surely all be Top Five selections. Secondly, with the leagues constant need for non-import O-Linemen, teams looking for OL depth will be forced to reach for lower ranked prospects (i.e. draft them earlier than their ability suggests they should be picked). As for Duvernay-Tardif, the gap between the top four or five O-Line prospects and the rest of the class means that his NFL interest shouldnt cause him to fall as far as he would have in a deeper draft pool. As a precedent, Ill point to the 2005 CFL Draft. Much like the Class of 2014, there werent a lot of "cant miss" offensive line prospects. A few days before that draft, the clear No. 1 prospect, Toledo tackle Nick Kaczur, had been selected in the 3rd round of the NFL Draft. Despite the limited supply of upper echelon O-Linemen, the demand for non-import blockers remained the same, as eight of the first nineteen selections were offensive linemen, including Kaczur, who went 9th overall. Simply put, the Toronto Argonauts, who chose him, felt that the likelihood of Kaczur returning to Canada within a few years was greater than the likelihood of the linemen who were still available developing into quality starters within the same time frame. In the same draft a similar line of thinking led to the second-ranked O-Lineman, Chris Best, going 4th overall despite having already committed to a Masters degree program that would keep him from turning pro until two years later. Godfrey Ellis was chosen 10th overall even after measuring in at 510 at the Combine. The fact that Jeff Keeping, a college tight end, had never played O-Line didnt stop him from being drafted - as a guard - 18th overall. John Comiskey went one spot later even though he hadnt played a single snap in the previous season. Fast forward to 2014, where the point is this. The top offensive linemen will be snapped up early. Once Lavertu, Goossen, Foucault, and Player are gone, teams will have to evaluate the likelihood and timeline of Duvernay-Tardif becoming a CFL lineman vs. the likelihood and timeline of the same happening for the remaining O-Linemen on the board.
