Far more upset was Nicklas Backstrom, who remains clearly miffed that an allergy medication hes taken for years cost him a chance to play for a gold medal. The Washington Capitals held their first post-Olympics practice Tuesday, a session overshadowed by residue from the Winter Games even as they tried to focus on the resumption of their NHL schedule. Ovechkin was one of the faces of Sochi, bent on winning the gold on home ice. Instead, the Russians were eliminated in the quarterfinals for the second consecutive Olympics. "First of all, I want to say sorry to the fans," Ovechkin said. "Because its once in a lifetime opportunity to represent your country in the Olympics, and you didnt get the results, you didnt get any medal. Of course the fans, the media and the people who support Russia, family, was upset, but life goes on." Ovechkin took the Olympic disappointment especially hard four years ago, but this time he had to immediately turn his attention to his family. His father, who has a history of heart problems, became ill following one of his sons games and required surgery. Ovechkin wasnt told until three days later, after Russia had been eliminated. "Soon as I found out that hes in hospital and hes feeling not that good and he could be dying, I just forget the game that we lose against Finland. ... Just go there and spend time with him and saw him," Ovechkin said. "It was great feelings to see whats happening and how hes feeling. Thats most important thing." Ovechkin said his father, mother and brother were flying home to Moscow on Tuesday. Ovechkin said he understands the criticism he received for his play during the Olympics -- "I didnt score lots of goals out there" -- but the 28-year-old three-time league MVP appears ready to refocus on the Capitals, who resume play Thursday at Florida. "This is a very tough loss for me and for Russia, but Im almost 30," Ovechkin said. "I have to handle it. I have to fight through it." The lingering Olympic sting was more evident on the face of Backstrom, who helped lead Sweden to the gold medal game but was pulled from the lineup shortly before faceoff because he had failed a doping test. Without one of its top players, Sweden lost 3-0 to Canada. "Ive had allergies for seven years, since I got here," Backstrom said. "Everyone that lives in the Washington area knows how bad it is here. Ive been taking Zyrtec-D for the last seven years and I havent been doing anything differently. Ive been playing internationally, in the world championships (and) Olympics before, and so I havent done anything differently." An ingredient in the allergy medicine is on the list of banned substances for Olympic competition, but Backstrom said he was told by the Sweden team doctor that he could take one pill a day without triggering a positive test. "Who do I blame?" Backstrom said. "Well, I followed the doctors recommendation." Backstrom said he expects a two-week wait to find out whether he will be awarded his silver medal, which is being held at the International Ice Hockey Federation offices in Zurich. "Obviously, its not fun to deal with," Backstrom said. "I dont wish no one to have to go through this, if Im going to be honest with you. Its not fun. But Ive got to look forward to play next game on Thursday. Ive got to focus on Washington right now." Backstroms teammates, much like the international hockey community in general, were shocked at how his situation was handled. "Its just ridiculous that it can happen at a big tournament like this," forward Martin Erat said, "at the Olympics just before the finals when everybody is ready to go and you just want to enjoy the sport. It just happened because of some stupidity, and its just unbelievable that this can happen in the Olympics." The Capitals sent five players to Sochi, and four of them have dealt with some sort of unexpected life event that has derailed an attempt to return to normalcy after the Olympics. Indians manager Terry Francona announced the move before Saturday nights game against Tampa Bay. He met with the Simcoe, Ont. native prior to batting practice. Axford is 1-3 with nine saves and a 4.91 ERA in 17 games in his first season with the Indians. He has really struggled in the last week, and was pulled in the ninth inning of Clevelands 6-3 win on Friday night. "We told him, for now, were going to kind of get you out of that role and try to get you in some situations where we can get him on a roll again," Francona said. "I told him numerous times, because I mean it, the goal is to get him back as our closer, and I think he understands that. I dont want him to do it in like two days because I dont want some Band-Aid. I want him when he gets it, to take it and stay there," he said. A group of four relievers that includes Cody Allen, Scott Atchison, Marc Rzepczynski and Bryan Shaw could all get opportunities to fill the role. "The one thing I assured them is that when we get to the ninth, whoevers pitching, were not going to have four guys warming up because we think youre good," Francona said. Axford was signed to a one-year, $4.5 million contract as a free agent in December after pitching for Milwaukee and St. Louis last season. The one-time Brewers closer had 105 saves from 2010-12, and converted 49 straight save chances during a stretch. The Brewers traded an ineffective Axford to St. Louis in late August. Axford became a reliable reliever for the Cardinals down the stretch and pitched for them in the World Series. The Indians hoped the 31-year-old righty would do well replacing former All-Star closer Chris Perez, now with the Los Angeles Dodgers. But Axfords rough patch started last Sunday, when he gave up a three-run homer to Dayan Viciedo in the ninth inning of a 4-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox. The next day, Eduardo Escobar homered in the 10th off Axford and lifted Minnesota to a 1-0 win. Axfords latest tough outing came Friday night. Braves announced the agreement with Teheran on the day pitchers and catchers had their first workout in spring training. Braves general manager Frank Wren said Teheran is "one of the best young pitchers in the National League and one of our core of players we expect to be together for a number of years." If the Braves exercise their $12 million option for the 2020 season, Teheran will earn more than $44 million over the next seven years. Zbynek Michalek scored against his former team, his first goal in 83 games, and the Coyotes became the first Pacific Division team to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins in regulation this season with a 3-1 victory on Saturday night. Mike Ribeiro had a goal and an assist for Phoenix. Radim Vrbata scored the third goal for the Coyotes, who were coming off perhaps their worst loss of the season, 3-2 at home to the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night. "I think we had something to prove," Michalek said. "We believed in this room that when we play the right way, we can play against any team. I think tonight was a great effort by everybody." Evgeni Malkin scored for the Penguins, who entered 8-0-1 against Pacific Division foes. Michaleks previous goal was scored on March 5, 2012, for Pittsburgh against Phoenix. "Its been almost two years," he said. "Hopefully I dont have to wait that long for the next one." Michalek acknowledged that he had extra motivation for this one. "For sure," he said. "This one feels good, and for me even sweeter. Anytime you play against your former team, you want to show up, you want to win." Bennett was hurt during Fridays victory over the New York Islanders. This is Bennetts second trip to the injured list this season. He previously missed 11 games because of a lower body injury. Growing up in the Toronto neighbourhood of Mimico, Brendan and Reilly Smith never played organized hockey together. Just everything else. "We were always playing mini sticks or road hockey or shinny on the ice out on the rink, stuff like that," Brendan Smith said. "We were always playing with or against each other." Inevitably, one-on-one games in the basement would get heated. If it was last goal wins, Reilly said Brendan would often make sure they kept playing until he scored it. It wont be that easy this time as Brendans Detroit Red Wings meet Reillys Boston Bruins in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Theyve met in the regular season, but this was a matchup the brothers and their parents were hoping to avoid. "We dont like when theyre against each other," mother Deidre said on HBOs "24/7" program. "We like it when theyre against other people." When the Red Wings were making their wild-card run last month, Reilly told Brendan to keep racking up the points to get the first spot and a matchup with the Pittsburgh Penguins instead of his Bruins. "He told me he doesnt want to see that," Brendan recalled. "He doesnt want to see that in the first round because he thinks we play really well against them. I think we match up decently well against Boston. I think we match up better against them than Pittsburgh." Reilly didnt get his wish, as the Bruins and Red Wings are meeting in the playoffs for the first time since 1957. Game 1 is Friday night in Boston. That was 30 years before Lester and Deidre Smith started having kids, and now they have to witness their sons playing against each other. "Theyll probably be wearing a jersey sewed down the middle with Boston and Detroit," Reilly told reporters in Wilmington, Mass., as quoted by the Boston Globe. "Maybe my mom wont wear it, its definitely a fashion statement. But I dont think my dad will worry too much." Brendan said he and Reilly talk every day during the season, sometimes for confidence-boosting purposes. "I talk to him about things, things that are going wrong with him, if hes on a cold streak. We can both help each other," Brendan said. "Were always talking. I think its good for me and I think its good for both of us is that we understand. "I think hes been the most shock-and-awe factor in that trade that nobody saw that (was going) to happen," Brendan said. "We did as a family, and a lot of people that have seen Reilly in previous years in college and St. Mikes, they knew who Reilly was." All Reilly needed, according to his brother, was an opportunity to play with better linemates. Getting that chance, eventually on a line with Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron, Reilly broke out with 20 goals and 31 assists for a career-high 51 points. "He never really got that great of a chance with Dallas on the fourth line (where) its hard to produce when youre a skill player," Brendan said. "Once he got into a system where hes starting to play with high-production players, obviously he jumped off the page." Reillys stats at the start to his Bruins tenure certainly jumped off the page. After just three goals and six assists in 37 games with the Stars last season, he had 30 points in his first 38 games for Boston. "Its kind of interesting to watch it and for me to follow it. Reilly came out flying, he was really hot and then it became Marchand and now its Bergeron," Brendan said. "Its like theyre all taking their turn to get that limelight. ... Its a good line and its impressive to see that Reillys done so well." Even though Reilly went cold late in the season, he still finished sixth on the Presidents Trophy-winning Bruins in scoring. He credited captain Zdeno Chara and others for the fact he was able to integrate so well into an established group. "I think it comes down to the leadership on this team," Reilly said. "From management down, it seems like, for me at least being a new player joining this system, the structure was there. They just kind of throw you into it. It doesnt really matter who it is, someones always trying to help you out and make your game easier and help you be more successful. " That a couple of hockey players from Mimico found success isnt surprising, considering Brendan Shanahan, David Clarkson, Dave Bolland and others came out of there. Two from the same family, Brendan said, is a testament to their parents. "The drive and all theyve done for us and how theyve brought us up from young guys, I think thats the main reason why weve been successful," he said. "We always wanted to be professional and play in the NHL and we were fortunate to do that. And I think thats something our parents instilled in us was that drive." ' ' '

The current Premier League cellar-dwellers have reportedly inked a trio of players, including a pair of castaways from Manchester United. BBC is reporting Cardiff has reached deals to acquire Fabio, Wilfried Zaha and Kenwyne Jones. Zaha will reportedly join the team on loan for the rest of the season. United acquired him in the middle of the 2012-13 season from Crystal Palace. The 21-year-old has made just two Premier League appearances for United this season, being largely overshadowed by young phenom Adnan Januzaj. Fabio, meanwhile, is believed to be joining Cardiff on a permanent deal. The 23-year-old fullback has made just one Premier League appearance for United this season after spending all of 2012-13 at Queens Park Rangers on loan. He has made 22 career appearances for United but has failed to become the type of everyday player his twin brother, Rafael, has at Old Trafford. Jones, meanwhile, is reportedly set to head to Wales in a sign-and-trade striker swap in exchange for Cardiff striker Peter Odemwingie. The 29-year-old Jones has no goals in seven appearances for Stoke City this season.
