The Sharks will try to match their longest winning streak of the season tonight.

ARLINGTON, Va. Deion Sanders 49ers Jersey . -- Alex Ovechkin apologized for Russias hockey performance at the Olympics, a sentiment put in perspective by the encouraging news that his father was on the way home after heart surgery. Far more upset was Nicklas Backstrom, who remains clearly miffed that an allergy medication hes taken for years cost him a chance to play for a gold medal. The Washington Capitals held their first post-Olympics practice Tuesday, a session overshadowed by residue from the Winter Games even as they tried to focus on the resumption of their NHL schedule. Ovechkin was one of the faces of Sochi, bent on winning the gold on home ice. Instead, the Russians were eliminated in the quarterfinals for the second consecutive Olympics. "First of all, I want to say sorry to the fans," Ovechkin said. "Because its once in a lifetime opportunity to represent your country in the Olympics, and you didnt get the results, you didnt get any medal. Of course the fans, the media and the people who support Russia, family, was upset, but life goes on." Ovechkin took the Olympic disappointment especially hard four years ago, but this time he had to immediately turn his attention to his family. His father, who has a history of heart problems, became ill following one of his sons games and required surgery. Ovechkin wasnt told until three days later, after Russia had been eliminated. "Soon as I found out that hes in hospital and hes feeling not that good and he could be dying, I just forget the game that we lose against Finland. ... Just go there and spend time with him and saw him," Ovechkin said. "It was great feelings to see whats happening and how hes feeling. Thats most important thing." Ovechkin said his father, mother and brother were flying home to Moscow on Tuesday. Ovechkin said he understands the criticism he received for his play during the Olympics -- "I didnt score lots of goals out there" -- but the 28-year-old three-time league MVP appears ready to refocus on the Capitals, who resume play Thursday at Florida. "This is a very tough loss for me and for Russia, but Im almost 30," Ovechkin said. "I have to handle it. I have to fight through it." The lingering Olympic sting was more evident on the face of Backstrom, who helped lead Sweden to the gold medal game but was pulled from the lineup shortly before faceoff because he had failed a doping test. Without one of its top players, Sweden lost 3-0 to Canada. "Ive had allergies for seven years, since I got here," Backstrom said. "Everyone that lives in the Washington area knows how bad it is here. Ive been taking Zyrtec-D for the last seven years and I havent been doing anything differently. Ive been playing internationally, in the world championships (and) Olympics before, and so I havent done anything differently." An ingredient in the allergy medicine is on the list of banned substances for Olympic competition, but Backstrom said he was told by the Sweden team doctor that he could take one pill a day without triggering a positive test. "Who do I blame?" Backstrom said. "Well, I followed the doctors recommendation." Backstrom said he expects a two-week wait to find out whether he will be awarded his silver medal, which is being held at the International Ice Hockey Federation offices in Zurich. "Obviously, its not fun to deal with," Backstrom said. "I dont wish no one to have to go through this, if Im going to be honest with you. Its not fun. But Ive got to look forward to play next game on Thursday. Ive got to focus on Washington right now." Backstroms teammates, much like the international hockey community in general, were shocked at how his situation was handled. "Its just ridiculous that it can happen at a big tournament like this," forward Martin Erat said, "at the Olympics just before the finals when everybody is ready to go and you just want to enjoy the sport. It just happened because of some stupidity, and its just unbelievable that this can happen in the Olympics." The Capitals sent five players to Sochi, and four of them have dealt with some sort of unexpected life event that has derailed an attempt to return to normalcy after the Olympics. Ovechkin had the health scare with his father, Backstrom has the fallout from the doping test, Swedish forward Marcus Johansson is stuck in Stockholm because of an visa issue -- the Capitals expect him to join them in Florida for Thursdays game -- and Erat returned to his family in Nashville, Tenn., as soon as he could after the Czech Republic was eliminated. "We just finished our quarterfinal game, and I went for my phone, and our friend had called me and said your baby girl, Victoria Bella, is born," Erat said. "First we lost in the quarterfinal, it was hard to swallow, and when I got the news, it brought back a smile on my face." Bruce Ellington 49ers Jersey . Reassurance came from Paul Tesori, his caddie and close friend whose newborn son is in intensive care in a Florida hospital. "Paul sent me a text this morning, just told me he loved me and wanted to go out and fight as hard as I would any other day," Simpson said Sunday after doing just that. Steve Johnson . -- Chris Wondolowski scored his 10th goal of the season and the San Jose Earthquakes made it stand for a 1-0 victory against the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday. The struggling Toronto Maple Leafs try to snap a four-game winless skid tonight when they play host to the red-hot San Jose Sharks at Air Canada Centre. You can listen to the game on TSN Radio 1050 in Toronto. Toronto will try to halt its longest slide of the season. The current 0-2-2 stretch is the clubs worst skid since it dropped five straight (0-3-2) from March 7-16 of last season. Nazem Kadri will not be in the lineup tonight for the Leafs. Kadri will miss the game on bereavement after the death of his grandfather.  The 23-year-old has seven goals and 10 assists in 24 games this season. He missed three games in November after a suspension for his hit to head of Minnesota Wild goaltender Niklas Backstrom. Peter Holland will start in place of Kadri. Toronto wrapped its November schedule with a mediocre 4-6-3 record. The Maple Leafs suffered a regulation loss in their last game of the month, dropping a 4-2 decision at Montreal on Saturday. The Leafs fell behind 2-0 in the first period of Saturdays loss in Montreal and saw the deficit grow to four goals before James van Riemsdyk scored his 12th goal of the season with 1:50 left in the second period. Mason Raymond added Torontos only other goal of the game just 22 seconds later. Canadiens goaltender Carey Price made 12 of his 34 saves in a spotless third period to help the Habs hold on for the win over their bitter rivals. "I thought it was a hard-fought game," said van Riemsdyk. "There were times we didnt play as well as we could have. Those were the times that cost us the game." Jonathan Bernier gave up four goals on 39 shots for the Maple Leafs. Bernier could get the start again on Tuesday and is 1-2-0 with a 3.57 GAA in four career appearances against San Jose. Fellow Toronto goaltender James Reimer is 1-1-0 with a 2.02 GAA in two lifetime outings versus the Sharks. The Maple Leafs hope to get back on track tonight at the start of a brief two-game homestand. Toronto, which also will welcome Dallas on Thursday, is 9-4-0 as the host this season compared to a 5-6-3 mark on the road. Toronto went 0-2-1 on a recent three-game road trip and was winless on the road in November (0-4-3). Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul will sit out a fourth straight game on Tuesday duue to a groin injury. Chris Borland Jersey. Lupul has eight goals and seven assists in 22 tilts this season. Cody Franson will be a game-time decision for the Leafs on defence. Franson did not play in the Leafs Saturday night loss. The Sharks will try to match their longest winning streak of the season tonight. The Sharks have won their last five outings, leaving them one victory shy of their season-opening six-game tear from Oct. 3-15. All told, the Sharks have posted victories in eight of their past nine outings and their recent hot play has vaulted San Jose into first place in the Pacific Division standings. Anaheim, which hosts Los Angeles on Tuesday, is one point in back of San Jose for the Pacific lead. San Jose, however, has a solid 8-2-3 record as the guest this season and has won its last three trips to Toronto. The Sharks have taken five of six overall from the Leafs. The Sharks also played on Saturday when they recorded a home shootout win over the Ducks, who entered the contest tied with San Jose for first in the Pacific. Joe Pavelski scored in the second round of the shootout to lift the Sharks past Anaheim, 4-3, to take sole possession of the divisions top spot. Patrick Marleau had a goal and an assist for the Sharks, who went 5-0-0 on a recent five-game homestand. Martin Havlat and Logan Couture also lit the lamp Saturday, while Antti Niemi stopped 28-of-31 shots in the victory. "Its the division, its the conference," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said after the win. "Its that close. Its got to be exciting for hockey fans all over because there really isnt anybody thats pulling away or a clear-cut favorite, and some really important hard-fought games at this time of year." The Sharks received a scare in the first period when captain Joe Thornton was hit near the left eye with a deflected puck. The veteran centerman left the game briefly before returning later in the period. Thornton, who contributed an assist towards Saturdays win, has registered a point in five straight games and is expected to play on Tuesday. He is leading San Jose this season with 29 points on four goals and 25 assists. Niemi expects to get the start tonight for San Jose and is 1-1-0 with a 2.01 goals against average in two career games against Toronto. ' ' '

who had been regarded as a top prospect

ST. Tommy McDonald Eagles Jersey . PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Canadian John Axford is out as the Cleveland Indians closer. Indians manager Terry Francona announced the move before Saturday nights game against Tampa Bay. He met with the Simcoe, Ont. native prior to batting practice. Axford is 1-3 with nine saves and a 4.91 ERA in 17 games in his first season with the Indians. He has really struggled in the last week, and was pulled in the ninth inning of Clevelands 6-3 win on Friday night. "We told him, for now, were going to kind of get you out of that role and try to get you in some situations where we can get him on a roll again," Francona said. "I told him numerous times, because I mean it, the goal is to get him back as our closer, and I think he understands that. I dont want him to do it in like two days because I dont want some Band-Aid. I want him when he gets it, to take it and stay there," he said. A group of four relievers that includes Cody Allen, Scott Atchison, Marc Rzepczynski and Bryan Shaw could all get opportunities to fill the role. "The one thing I assured them is that when we get to the ninth, whoevers pitching, were not going to have four guys warming up because we think youre good," Francona said. Axford was signed to a one-year, $4.5 million contract as a free agent in December after pitching for Milwaukee and St. Louis last season. The one-time Brewers closer had 105 saves from 2010-12, and converted 49 straight save chances during a stretch. The Brewers traded an ineffective Axford to St. Louis in late August. Axford became a reliable reliever for the Cardinals down the stretch and pitched for them in the World Series. The Indians hoped the 31-year-old righty would do well replacing former All-Star closer Chris Perez, now with the Los Angeles Dodgers. But Axfords rough patch started last Sunday, when he gave up a three-run homer to Dayan Viciedo in the ninth inning of a 4-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox. The next day, Eduardo Escobar homered in the 10th off Axford and lifted Minnesota to a 1-0 win. Axfords latest tough outing came Friday night. He entered in the ninth with a 6-2 lead, but gave up David DeJesus RBI double with two outs and then walked Ben Zobrist to load the bases. Allen replaced Axford and got a fly ball from James Loney on a 3-2 pitch for his first save. Womens White Nick Foles Elite Jersey . Doneil Henry, the man who scored Toronto FCs last-gasp game winner Saturday, knows that probably better than anyone. Jordan Matthews . Ames was unanimously named for induction into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame on Wednesday, becoming the 74th member of the countrys golfs shrine.KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Right-hander Julio Teheran and the Atlanta Braves agreed to terms on a six-year, $32.4 million contract on Friday with a club option for the 2020 season. The deal with the 23-year-old Teheran was another move by the team to lock up a key young player on a long-term deal. First baseman Freddie Freeman, 24, agreed to $135 million, eight-year deal on Feb. 5, the same day the team announced a two-year, $13.3 million deal with right fielder Jason Heyward, 24. Braves announced the agreement with Teheran on the day pitchers and catchers had their first workout in spring training. Braves general manager Frank Wren said Teheran is "one of the best young pitchers in the National League and one of our core of players we expect to be together for a number of years." If the Braves exercise their $12 million option for the 2020 season, Teheran will earn more than $44 million over the next seven years. Teheran, who had been regarded as a top prospect, realized those expectations in 2013, when he became an important member of the rotation as a rookie. He was 14-8 with a 3.20 ERA and finished fourth in voting for the NL Rookie of the Year. "I couldnt wait to see him pitch last year," said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez. "He had a tougher time pitching in Triple-A." Teheran led all rookies with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3.78, ranking seventh among all National League starting pitchers. Teheran received a $1 million signing bonus and will earn $800,000 in 2014. His annual salaries will go up to $1 million in 2015, $3.3 million in 2016, $6.3 million in 2017, $8 million in 2018 and $11 million in 2019. Teheran joins Krris Medlen and Mike Minor as leaders of a young rotation that lost Tim Hudson and Paul Maholm to free agency. Mens Green Nick Foles Elite Jersey. Brandon Beachy is expected to earn the fourth spot in the rotation as he continues his comeback from 2012 elbow ligament-replacement surgery. Beachy, a right-hander, had a follow-up procedure to clean up the right elbow last season. Gonzalez said that he is looking for someone to take over as a leader of the staff. "Its early but I feel good about this team," Gonzalez said. "We lost Huddy (Hudson) but we still had the ERA tile last year. I like what we have and everybody is ready." Left-hander Alex Wood and veteran Freddy Garcia are expected to lead the competition for the final spot in the rotation until free-agent signee Gavin Floyd completes his recovery from elbow surgery. The Braves expect Floyd to be ready to pitch as early as May. "Alex Wood helped us win the division last year," Gonzalez said. "I am comfortable with what we have coming back this year. You can never have too much pitching." NOTES: Braves special assistant to the general manager Jim Fregosi, 71, passed away in Miami on Friday. Gonzalez expressed his appreciation for Fregosi who managed four teams during his 53-year professional baseball career. "This is a day of mixed emotions," Gonzalez said. "We lost one of our family members.". Floyd has impressed Gonzalez so far. "He looks like hes ready," Gonzalez said. "The way he throws in batting practice, its like hes never been away." Floyd was 0-4 in five starts for the White Sox last season. ' ' '

Phoenix ahead 1-0 with his 14th goal

GLENDALE, Ariz. Matt Bryant . -- Two nights after losing to the Eastern Conferences worst team, the Phoenix Coyotes handled the best. Zbynek Michalek scored against his former team, his first goal in 83 games, and the Coyotes became the first Pacific Division team to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins in regulation this season with a 3-1 victory on Saturday night. Mike Ribeiro had a goal and an assist for Phoenix. Radim Vrbata scored the third goal for the Coyotes, who were coming off perhaps their worst loss of the season, 3-2 at home to the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night. "I think we had something to prove," Michalek said. "We believed in this room that when we play the right way, we can play against any team. I think tonight was a great effort by everybody." Evgeni Malkin scored for the Penguins, who entered 8-0-1 against Pacific Division foes. Michaleks previous goal was scored on March 5, 2012, for Pittsburgh against Phoenix. "Its been almost two years," he said. "Hopefully I dont have to wait that long for the next one." Michalek acknowledged that he had extra motivation for this one. "For sure," he said. "This one feels good, and for me even sweeter. Anytime you play against your former team, you want to show up, you want to win." The Penguins, who had won three straight over the Coyotes, made their first appearance in Arizona in 3 1-2 years. Mike Smith, back in goal after Phoenix had gone with Thomas Greiss the previous two games, made 23 saves. Pittsburghs Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 27 shots. With just 24 shots, the Penguins offence was off its usual form. "Tonight was a tough-fought game. There wasnt a lot out there," Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma said. "Thats the kind of games we expect. We have to be able to play a patient game, not be taking chances with the way we play or the way we play with the puck." Playing in front 17,362, the Coyotes second-largest home crowd this season, Pittsburgh fell behind 2-0. The Penguins made it a one-goal game before Vrbatas shot on a 2-on-1 rush slipped through Fleury to make it 3-1 with 15:47 to play. The Penguins fell to 2-10 in games in which NHL scoring leader Sidney Crosby fails to get a point. "They play good team defence as a group," Crosby said. "I think we didnt make it tough enough on them. We didnt hold the puck in their zone. Theyre pretty good at blocking shots and getting their stick on pucks. "You have to give them credit, but I dont think we did a good enough job of creating, either. I think we could have done more there." Coyotes coach Dave Tippett credited the defence of Oliver Ekman-Larsson against the Crosby line. "Ollie was all-world there," Tippett said. "Thats an unbelievable game by him." Ekman-Larsson called it "a good challenge for me and Z (Michalek)." "I think we did a pretty good job all night," he said. "So it was fun." Ribeiro put Phoenix ahead 1-0 with his 14th goal of the season and 200th of his career. His wrist shot from the left circle got past Fleurys left side and rattled in with 7:18 to play in the opening period. David Schlemnko and Antoine Vermette had assists. Vermette extended his career-high point streak to seven games. Ribeiros goal came just after Pittsburgh killed a penalty. After Pittsburghs prolific power play failed to score, Phoenix made it 2-0 on Michaleks slap shot past Fleury with 9:50 left in the second. Ekman-Larsson and Ribeiro got the assists. The Penguins made it one-goal game when Malkin scored his 16th of the season, from the right side of the net off a pass from James Neal. Jussi Jokinen also got an assist on the goal. NOTES: Pittsburgh is 11-4-1 against the Western Conference. ... The Penguins are 10-13-1 when their opponent scores first. ... Pittsburghs Olli Maatta left the ice after taking a puck to the face in the third period. ... The only other Pacific Division team to beat Pittsburgh was Edmonton 4-3 in OT on Jan. 10. ... was an opportunity to play with better linemates.

PITTSBURGH -- The injured list keeps growing for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Justin Maxwell Royals Jersey . Forward Beau Bennett will miss 8-to-10 weeks after undergoing wrist surgery on Monday. Bennett was hurt during Fridays victory over the New York Islanders. This is Bennetts second trip to the injured list this season. He previously missed 11 games because of a lower body injury. The Penguins will also be without forward Tanner Glass for 3-to-4 weeks after Glass broke his hand in a loss to Montreal on Saturday. Defenceman Paul Martin will sit out Wednesdays game against Toronto due to a lower-body injury. The Penguins called up Andrew Ebbett from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL on Tuesday. Ebbett had six goals and nine assists in 18 games there. Bo Jackson Royals Jersey . JOHNS, N.Billy Butler Royals Jersey . Hell be hard-pressed to match an unbeaten streak like this, though. Tanaka had his unbeaten regular-season run snapped at 42 starts, allowing a career-high four runs in six innings, and the Chicago Cubs beat the New York Yankees 6-1 on Tuesday night. Growing up in the Toronto neighbourhood of Mimico, Brendan and Reilly Smith never played organized hockey together. Just everything else. "We were always playing mini sticks or road hockey or shinny on the ice out on the rink, stuff like that," Brendan Smith said. "We were always playing with or against each other." Inevitably, one-on-one games in the basement would get heated. If it was last goal wins, Reilly said Brendan would often make sure they kept playing until he scored it. It wont be that easy this time as Brendans Detroit Red Wings meet Reillys Boston Bruins in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Theyve met in the regular season, but this was a matchup the brothers and their parents were hoping to avoid. "We dont like when theyre against each other," mother Deidre said on HBOs "24/7" program. "We like it when theyre against other people." When the Red Wings were making their wild-card run last month, Reilly told Brendan to keep racking up the points to get the first spot and a matchup with the Pittsburgh Penguins instead of his Bruins. "He told me he doesnt want to see that," Brendan recalled. "He doesnt want to see that in the first round because he thinks we play really well against them. I think we match up decently well against Boston. I think we match up better against them than Pittsburgh." Reilly didnt get his wish, as the Bruins and Red Wings are meeting in the playoffs for the first time since 1957. Game 1 is Friday night in Boston. That was 30 years before Lester and Deidre Smith started having kids, and now they have to witness their sons playing against each other. "Theyll probably be wearing a jersey sewed down the middle with Boston and Detroit," Reilly told reporters in Wilmington, Mass., as quoted by the Boston Globe. "Maybe my mom wont wear it, its definitely a fashion statement. But I dont think my dad will worry too much." The Red Wings won three of four meetings with the Bruins this season, including April 2 in Detroit to snap Bostons streak of 16 games without a regulation loss. Reilly had an assist in each of those games, while Brendan went without a point the three times he played against Boston. "When Boston plays Detroit, we root for both of them to play well," father Lester said on "24/7" in December. "But its fun." Its much more fun for the brothers to watch and help each other now that theyve reached the NHL. Brendan said he and Reilly talk every day during the season, sometimes for confidence-boosting purposes. "I talk to him about things, things that are going wrong with him, if hes on a cold streak. We can both help each other," Brendan said. "Were always talking. I think its good for me and I think its good for both of us is that we understand. Were both in the same profession and we know what its like on a day-in, day-out basis, so we can help each other and maybe if things areent going well crack a smile on each other. Eric Hosmer Royals Jersey. Its a good relationship." Brendan, at 25 the middle of three brothers with professional lacrosse player Rory the oldest, is Reillys biggest supporter. He didnt quite agree that Reilly turned out to be the best return from Bruins trade that sent Tyler Seguin to the Dallas Stars -- because Loui Eriksson is really good -- but he expected the 23-year-old forward to thrive. "I think hes been the most shock-and-awe factor in that trade that nobody saw that (was going) to happen," Brendan said. "We did as a family, and a lot of people that have seen Reilly in previous years in college and St. Mikes, they knew who Reilly was." All Reilly needed, according to his brother, was an opportunity to play with better linemates. Getting that chance, eventually on a line with Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron, Reilly broke out with 20 goals and 31 assists for a career-high 51 points. "He never really got that great of a chance with Dallas on the fourth line (where) its hard to produce when youre a skill player," Brendan said. "Once he got into a system where hes starting to play with high-production players, obviously he jumped off the page." Reillys stats at the start to his Bruins tenure certainly jumped off the page. After just three goals and six assists in 37 games with the Stars last season, he had 30 points in his first 38 games for Boston. "Its kind of interesting to watch it and for me to follow it. Reilly came out flying, he was really hot and then it became Marchand and now its Bergeron," Brendan said. "Its like theyre all taking their turn to get that limelight. ... Its a good line and its impressive to see that Reillys done so well." Even though Reilly went cold late in the season, he still finished sixth on the Presidents Trophy-winning Bruins in scoring. He credited captain Zdeno Chara and others for the fact he was able to integrate so well into an established group. "I think it comes down to the leadership on this team," Reilly said. "From management down, it seems like, for me at least being a new player joining this system, the structure was there. They just kind of throw you into it. It doesnt really matter who it is, someones always trying to help you out and make your game easier and help you be more successful. " That a couple of hockey players from Mimico found success isnt surprising, considering Brendan Shanahan, David Clarkson, Dave Bolland and others came out of there. Two from the same family, Brendan said, is a testament to their parents. "The drive and all theyve done for us and how theyve brought us up from young guys, I think thats the main reason why weve been successful," he said. "We always wanted to be professional and play in the NHL and we were fortunate to do that. And I think thats something our parents instilled in us was that drive." ' ' '

Cardiff City is loading up in hopes of staying in Englands top division for next season. Bobby Rainey Jersey . The current Premier League cellar-dwellers have reportedly inked a trio of players, including a pair of castaways from Manchester United. BBC is reporting Cardiff has reached deals to acquire Fabio, Wilfried Zaha and Kenwyne Jones. Zaha will reportedly join the team on loan for the rest of the season. United acquired him in the middle of the 2012-13 season from Crystal Palace. The 21-year-old has made just two Premier League appearances for United this season, being largely overshadowed by young phenom Adnan Januzaj. Fabio, meanwhile, is believed to be joining Cardiff on a permanent deal. The 23-year-old fullback has made just one Premier League appearance for United this season after spending all of 2012-13 at Queens Park Rangers on loan. He has made 22 career appearances for United but has failed to become the type of everyday player his twin brother, Rafael, has at Old Trafford. Jones, meanwhile, is reportedly set to head to Wales in a sign-and-trade striker swap in exchange for Cardiff striker Peter Odemwingie. The 29-year-old Jones has no goals in seven appearances for Stoke City this season. The moves come less than a month into the managerial tenure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the Norwegian former United striker, who took over the Cardiff sidelines on Jan. 2. Mike Alstott Shirts . -- Tyreke Evans is still making the adjustment from point guard to small forward for the Sacramento Kings. Mike Alstott Womens Jersey . TORONTO -- Drew MacIntyre knows the significance of his record-setting win Sunday. Jake Locker Elite Womens Jersey . The Toronto Marlies goalie made 30 saves in a 6-4 victory over the Abbotsford Heat, surpassing former Leafs prospect Justin Pogge in the record books with his single-season franchise best 27th win. "Its cool. Its an honour," said MacIntyre. "I dont take stuff like that lightly. Ive been in this league for a while so those kinds of things are nice." Marlies head coach Steve Spott said the game puck will be going to his star goaltender. "Its a special night for him and his family," Spott said. "Hes done so much for this organization on and off the ice. He really embodies what I think our organization is all about." Pogge, who now plays for Bofors IK in the Swedish Division 1 league, set the record during the 2008-09 season. "Good goalie. We had lots of battles I remember," said MacIntyre of Pogge. "Big guy and it wasnt easy to beat him." Leivo picked up the game-winner, giving Toronto a 5-4 lead at 9:51 of the third. He one-timed a shot from Greg McKegg from the side of the net, past Joni Ortio for his 18th of the season. "Great keep on by (Petter Granberg), kept it alive and it ended up with (McKegg) in the slot," said Leivo of the play. "He found me back door and I was fortunate enough to get it through that D-mans stick and put it into the net." Carter Ashton gave the Marlies a two-goal cushion at 16:19, beating Ortio for his 16th of the season. Toronto (41-20-6) had second-period goals from T.J. Brennan, Jamie Devane, McKegg and Tyler Biggs. Max Reinhart, Brett Olson, Ben Street and Shane OBrien responded for Abbotsford (37-25-7). Ortio, who was making his third straight start, made 21 saves in the loss. The win stretches Torontos unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1). The Marlies also won two of three over a three-game, three-night stretch this weekend. The loss, meanwhile, halted Abbotsfords win streak at two games. Abbotsford and Toronto combined for eight goals in a 16:40 span of the second heading to the third tied 4-4. Brennan opened the scoring, on a power play, with his team-leading 22nd goal of the season at 3:15. The fourth meeting between the two teams, and second in a week, was a heated affair with the physical play reaching its peak near the six-minute mark of the second. Heat forward Tim Miller caught Marlies defenceman Andrew MacWilliam with a big open-ice, shoulder-to-chest hit leaving the Toronto blue-liner struggling to get up. MacWilliam was helped to the bench and did not return. Spott said MacWilliam suffered a concussion as his head took a good bump when he fell to the ice. MacWilliams injury left the Marlies, who dressed just five defenceman because Eric Knodel was suffering from the flu, with just four blue-liners for over half the game. "Its definitely a different type of challenge," said Brennan of playing with four defencemen. "We had a ton of help from our forwards helping out. We played together as one unit and pulled out the win." Brad Staubitz caught Jordan Kremyr with an illegal check to the head and was assessed a minor penalty at 5:33 of the second period. Then 1:13 later, Kenny Ryan was penalized for slashing, giving Abbotsford a two-man advantage for 47 seconds. The Heat, who entered Sunday with the leagues sixth best road power play, scored twice. Reinhart tied it 1-1 at 7:04 on the two-man advantage. With Ryan still in the box, Olson tipped a Corey Locke 2-on-1 feed past MacIntyre at 8:43 giving the visitors their first lead of the game, 2-1. Street beat MacIntyre stick-side off a Staubitz neutral zone turnover, giving Abbotsford a 3-1 lead at 10:17 of the second. Toronto then scored three unanswered to take a 4-3 lead. Devane pulled Toronto to within one, one-timing a Jerred Smithson feed past Ortio at 10:34, and the Marlies tied it 3-3 at 11:48 as McKegg put home a loose puck off a scramble in front of Ortio for his 17th of the season. Biggs gave Toronto its second lead of the game at 18:37 of the second, beating Ortio in the slot. "It was nice being down 3-1 seeing the pushback that we had," said Spott. "We beat a very good hockey club here today. Theyre well coached, they play hard and we had to play our A-game. It was a good win by our team." However, with just five seconds remaining in the second period, OBrien tied it at four. Allan McPherson picked up his first career AHL point with an assist on the goal. Marlies leading point scorer Spencer Abbott left the game near the end of the second with an upper body injury and did not return. Spott said Abbott would undergo precautionary X-Rays. Notes: Marlies goaltender Garret Sparks was a healthy scratch as the team continues to carry three goaltenders. Toronto forward Brandon Kozun was a healthy scratch after taking a penalty late in Saturdays 2-1 shootout loss to Iowa. Frazer McLaren (hip flexor) is expected back at practice Tuesday and in game action Friday in Utica. Bishop Sankey Jersey . With four remaining Olympic berths up for grabs, Canadas Peng Peng Lee, Kristina Vaculik, Victoria Moors, Talia Chiarelli, Brittany Rogers and Madeline Gardiner finished second overall with a combined 221. Jason McCourty Jersey . The Maple Leafs are three points behind Columbus for the last playoff spot in the East with only three games left on their schedule. You can listen to the game live on TSN 1050 starting at 7:30pm et/4:30 pm pt.WASHINGTON - Fresh off his first All-Star Game appearance, DeMar DeRozan - heading into uncharted waters as the Raptors ready for a rare playoff push - addressed his teammates following Tuesday morning shoot around. "Each and every single game matters from here on out, especially if we want to do something special," he told them, as the third-seeded Raptors prepared to begin the unofficial second half of their season against the sixth place Washington Wizards. "We cant take [any] nights off," he stressed. "These 30 games are going to be big and weve got to start tonight." Message received, at least in the first of those final 30 games. It took just over four minutes for all five Raptors starters to get on the board. In the end, six players scored in double figures and the teams bench totaled 43 points on an impressive 18-for-26 shooting, as Toronto came away with a 103-93 win, its third in three games against the Wizards this season. "Thats whats great about our team, everybody understands their role and thats real big," said DeRozan, who had a quiet night by his recent standards, scoring 14 points. "We have anybody that can [step up], it can be anybody. If one guys not playing well, somebody else always picks it up." DeRozans uplifting words were not a surprise to Dwane Casey. The Raptors leading scorer had told his coach that he intended to make the speech on the flight to Washington the day prior. "[I] sat with him and talked about the second half of the season, what to expect, and he said he was going to do that," Casey said. "We talked [Monday] night as a team, talked about the next 30 games, what to expect as a team. Now weve got to follow it up with action. Every team coming out is going to be gunning for him - hes achieved All-Star status - and us as a team, were in the playoff hunt. So weve got to meet those expectations." As a team, the Raptors were expectedly rusty early on, specifically on defence. Washington scored 27 first-quarter points, shooting 57 per cent in the frame, while Wizards All-Star John Wall had 11, matching his game total from the Raptors last visit to Verizon Center, Torontos 101-88 win to begin the month of January. "Its always tough to find a rhythm when youre coming off the All-Star break," said Kyle Lowry, who vacationed in an undisclosed location this past weekend after being passed up for the All-Star Game. "Its always tough but we figured it out in the second half and third quarter, for me especially to get going a little bit." In a matchup between two of the best point guards in the Eastern Conference - arguably the two best - Lowry connected on just two of his eight first-half attempts, scoring six points as Wall exploded for 19, making nine of 12 shots. The Raptors lead guard came out of intermission looking like a man on a mission,, scoring 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting in the third, draining long jumpers, getting into the paint at will and knocking down a series of tricky step backs. Bruce Matthews Jersey. Lowry finished with a double-double, leading his team with 24 points and 10 assists and Wall was held to three points, without a single field goal, in the second half. "I was trying to attack a little bit more," Lowry, the scorned should-be-All-Star, said of his third-quarter clinic. "That first game out of the break is always tough and I didnt want to let that be an excuse for us to lose this game." "He took the game over in the third quarter and willed us to a win," Casey said of his point guard. "Just his aggressiveness. He attacked their feet, didnt settle for the three, got into the paint and kept attacking." The Raptors recorded 25 assists, 17 from their point guards - Lowry and Greivis Vasquez - and shot 57 per cent on the night, holding Washington, one of the better three-point shooting teams, to 4-of-15 from beyond the arch. Although it looked like it was going to be smooth sailing for Toronto in the third quarter, leading by as much as 20, things got interesting down the stretch when Washington turned up its defensive intensity and the Raptors quickly went ice cold. Toronto was held without a field goal in the final 7:35 of the game, as the Wizards cut their deficit to six down but were unable to get any closer. "We just turned the ball over way too many times against their pressure," Casey said after this team committed eight of their 15 miscues in the final frame. "Thats just from rust and time off, timing, speed of the game." The rest seemed to do wonders for the Raptors, winners of their last three games, specifically Amir Johnson, who has had over 10 days off after missing two contests with a sore right ankle. The Raptors forward made his return off the bench, scoring 14 points and grabbing five rebounds in a spirited 25 minutes of action. Patrick Patterson made his third straight start - scoring 10 points in 34 minutes - and should stick with the first unit for the time being as Johnson works his way back to full health, though Casey wouldnt commit to the lineup change. The Raptors will go for the four-game sweep of Washington when the Wizards visit Toronto next week. They are now four games ahead of the Wizards and a game and a half in front of the fourth-place Chicago Bulls, Torontos Wednesday opponent at the Air Canada Centre. "Thats a tough team," Lowry said of the Bulls, who will be well rested having arrived in Toronto Tuesday, getting the night off. "A different type of game tomorrow night. Theyre very defensive-minded. Theyve got a great coach [in Tom Thibodeau] and a very intense team, with Joakim (Noah) their All-Star. He leads the charge so weve got to match his intensity." ' ' '
